LAKEPORT — The Clear Lake Cardinals are running out of chances to secure that elusive first win of the season after falling 5-0 to the Fort Bragg Timberwolves in North Central League I boys soccer action Thursday in Lakeport.

Clear Lake (0-5) didn’t generate much in the way of an attack, according to head coach Kevin O’Brien, who watched his team fall behind 2-0 in the first half.

“We couldn’t maintain possession,” O’Brien said.

The Cardinals hit the road next week to play Willits on Tuesday and league-leading Middletown on Thursday before closing out their season Oct. 25 at home against Lower Lake.

Middletown 5, Lower Lake 1

At Lower Lake, the Lower Trojans came up short in their bid to hand the Middletown Mustangs a first league loss.

“I’ve get to give it up to them, that team is playing really good right now,” Lower Lake head coach Michael McMurtrey said of the Mustangs. “They started picking apart our defense.”

Middletown improved to 6-0 in league play. The Mustangs had a 2-0 lead in the first half when Lower Lake’s Justin Santana scored to make it 2-1 at the half.

“We had a few opportunities on PKs (penalty kicks), but for the life of me, we kicked them straight to the goalie,” McMurtrey said.

Middletown outscored Lower Lake 3-0 in the second half.

“They cracked it open,” McMurtrey said.

Lower Lake dropped a 2-1 decision on Tuesday at Fort Bragg.

The Trojans have a bye Tuesday and are home against Willits next Thursday at 5:45 p.m.

Middletown scoring wasn’t reported. The Mustangs are home Tuesday against Fort Bragg at 3 p.m.
