Redbud Audubon will host field trip to Wright Wetland Preserve

The Redbud Audubon Society will host a field trip to the Lake County Land Trust’s Wright Wetland Preserve on Saturday, Oct. 22, starting at 9 a.m.

The Wright Wetland Preserve, on the shoreline of Clear Lake near Lakeport, was purchased by the Lake County Land Trust in 2020 as part of its strategic plan to acquire priority wetlands areas critical to preserving important wildlife and bird habitats in the county.

The group will be led by experienced birders and members of both Redbud Audubon and the Land Trust. Be prepared to see migrating songbirds, raptors, woodpeckers and more.

The Wright Wetland Preserve is located at 446 Soda Bay Road. Coming from Lakeport, heading east on Soda Bay Road, the preserve is the second driveway on the left after going over the Manning Creek Bridge. It is just a short distance past the large recycling/transfer station. If you have any questions please call Redbud Audubon at (707) 805-9410 and leave a message or email: redbud.audubon@gmail.com. The field trip starts at 9 a.m. and be sure to be on time as someone will be waiting at the entrance to guide participants into the property.

MIDDLETOWN

‘BELONGING’ MAC’s 47th exhibit opens This Saturday October 15

Middletown Art Center (MAC) invites the public to their 47th exhibit opening, BELONGING, on Saturday, October 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at MAC. Come see the new display, enjoy the work and meet the artists. During the opening, visitors can participate in collaborative art making that expresses a sense of belonging to place and to Lake County’s arts and culture community.

Belonging is a deep and primal need to feel a part of something larger than ourselves, be it family, tribe, religion, culture, gender identity, or place. Feelings around belonging and/or alienation are central to the human experience and a core part of our ability to thrive. Without a sense of belonging, we are apt to drift into despair and, as we often see in the animal kingdom, perish.

Both familiar and new local and regional artists including several Native American artists who participated in MAC’s most recent show, Earth, Sky, and Everything In Between are featured in the new exhibit. Their work speaks to belonging in multiple ways and is sometimes edgy, sometimes romantic, cultural, gender-based, place-based, or formal,

“Questions and notions around the sense of belonging underscored MAC’s year-long cross-cultural Weaving Baskets, Weaving Bridges project through weaving workshops, stories, and conversations about roots, cultural identity, historical trauma, and otherness with Native American cultural educators and artists,” said MAC’s artistic director Lisa Kaplan. “Belonging organically emerged as the theme for our next show.”

BELONGING will be on view through January 8, Thursday to Monday, 10:30 to 5 p.m., or by appointment. It’s free to the public. A virtual tour will be available by the end of October on MAC’s website.

The MAC is located at 21456 State Hwy 175 at the junction of Hwy 29 in Middletown. To find out more about BELONGING and other programs, events, arts and cultural engagement opportunities, and ways to support the MAC’s efforts to weave the arts and culture into the fabric of life in Lake County, visit middletownartcenter.org or call 707-809-8118.

KELSEYVILLE

Kelseyville Student Scholarship Fund established to honor Martha Stokes Panella

A scholarship fund has been established to support the youth of Kelseyville in honor of Martha Stokes Panella.

Martha “Muffie” Stokes Panella had been a lifelong resident of Kelseyville when her life was cut short by breast cancer. Muffie was an active, much-loved community member who always enjoyed supporting Kelseyville projects.

The Memorial Fund was launched at the 2021 Kelseyville Pear Festival, where community members generously donated the initial funds. Her family since has contributed, ensuring that the Fund will award students for decades to come.

The committee that established and oversees the fund includes Kelseyville School Board member Allison Panella, Laura Stokes, Janice Stokes, Caitlin Panella, and Cindy Bain. The committee looks forward to awarding Kelseyville High School Students this year and into the future.

To make a tax-deductible donation to the Martha Stokes Memorial Fund or for questions contact Allison Panella at 707-483-2383.

UWNC launches campaign to raise $3 million for wildfire victims

Over the past few months, images of smoke-filled skies and feelings of profound loss hit NorCal residents as wildfires tore across their communities.

To adequately meet the growing needs of wildfire survivors, UWNC, in partnership with Tri-Counties Bank, is launching the United for Our Neighbors Campaign and NorCal Wildfire Fund, aiming to raise $3 million for wildfire relief by the end of December 2022. The 2022 fire season has already been significant in Northern California, with more than 400 structures destroyed, over 200,000 acres turned to ashes, and six lives lost.

Funds will directly aid the recovery of wildfire survivors in UWNC’s 9 county region, including UWNC’s RV assistance program, the Stable Housing Opportunities Program (SHOP), the Unmet Needs Roundtable, the 2-1-1 referral system, grants to community service providers, and mental health services for survivors.

UWNC and Tri-Counties Bank encourage individuals and organizations to donate online at norcalunitedway.org/wildfirerecovery .
