MIRANDA — South Fork beat Upper Lake 30-6 in a North Central League II eight-man football game Friday night in Miranda, eliminating the Cougars from the title race.
Upper Lake (1-3 league, 4-3 overall) scored its only points on Luke Summerfield’s 38-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in the second quarter.
“We couldn’t get anything going,” Upper Lake head coach Vince Moran said as the Cubs’ defense limited Upper Lake to 32 rushing yards and 63 yards of total offense. “Their defensive front wasn’t big, but they’re quick and aggressive.”
Upper Lake’s defense kept the Cougars in the game almost up to the very end. South Fork led 14-6 at halftime and it was still 14-6 going to the fourth quarter. The Cubs scored twice down the stretch to put it away.
“Our defense played pretty well overall, but we couldn’t move the ball,” Moran said
Field position also worked against the Cougars as South Fork was able to pin Upper Lake deep in its own territory on a handful of occasions.
“We had some short punts that gave them good field position,” Moran said.
The Cubs scored three times on the ground and once through the air.
“They have two pretty good running backs,” Moran said.
Will Henry anchored the Upper Lake defense with three sacks out of a team total of five.
Upper Lake returns home next Friday to play Cornerstone Christian (0-4, 3-4).
