MCKINLEYVILLE — Maddy Madrzyk and Olivia Hommer of Kelseyville High School fell 6-0, 6-1 to Sophia Britton and Natalie Goldberg of College Prep in the opening round of doubles play Saturday during the North Coast Section Girls Tennis Championships, which were split between McKinleyville and Arcata high school.
While most North Coast Section schools compete in girls tennis during the fall sports season and boys tennis during the spring sports season, Lake County schools play both in the spring. Madrzyk and partner Larue Furlani finished second in the Coastal Mountain Conference championships last spring. The CMC champions from St. Helena graduated last spring as did Furlani. As a result, Madrzyk and replacement partner Hommer represented the CMC in the fall section championships Saturday.
“Olivia had never played tennis before this October,” Kelseyville tennis head coach Andy Dobusch said. “I am incredibly proud of Maddy and Olivia’s willingness to play their first ever match against this level of competition. There was really high quality tennis being played with most of the players having official USTA rankings. Olivia’s athleticism and Maddy’s experience and shotmaking ability made them a challenging first-round match.”
Kelseyville had the only doubles team in the field that plays co-ed tennis in the spring, according to Dobusch.
“It was a fantastic experience for them and sets them up well for this spring,” Dobusch said of Madrzyk and Hommer.
