REDDING — Playing against a school four times their sized and ranked No. 1 in the Northern Section, the Kelseyville Knights fell 8-0 to Foothill High School in non-league girls soccer action Tuesday evening in Redding.

“They were legitimate,” Kelseyville head coach Patrick Mick said of the Cougars (6-2). “Playing a team like that will only make us better.”

Mick said the Cougars’ pinpoint passing was a sight to behold as they outscored Kelseyville (0-2) 6-0 in the first half.

“But we held them to only two goals in the second half,” Mick said.

Starting eight freshmen against a veteran Foothill team comprised of juniors and seniors put the Knights at a distinct disadvantage, according to Mick. Even so, several Kelseyville players turned in strong efforts, according to their coach. Among them were center-mid Angelina Vazquez and midfielder Kat Wheelan.

“They played their tails off,” Mick said.

Other Kelseyville standouts were forward Sherlyn Macias, who played forward in the first half and sweeper in the second half, and defenders Abigail Ortega, Mya Ogo and Xiamara Arias.

“We were defending the ball in our half about 95 percent of the time,” Mick said.

Kelseyville (1-1) has a long layoff until it returns to action Jan. 5 at home against Roseland University Prep.
