Lake County gathers to honor Veterans during the holiday season as part of annual ‘Wreaths Across America’ Day
Everyone is invited to attend Saturday, December 17, as Lake County gathers to honor Veterans during the holiday season as part of the annual Wreaths Across America Day. On this brisk December morning help to show the Veterans and families that they will not be forgotten.
Youth Organizations and Veteran Organizations have volunteered to conduct the Wreaths Across America Ceremony this year at Hartley Cemetery, Kelseyville, Lower Lake, Middletown and St. Mary’s Cemeteries on Saturday, December 17 starting promptly at 8:55 A.M. Eight ceremonial wreaths will be placed to remember all soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who served, honor their sacrifices and teach our younger generations about the high cost of our freedoms.
WAA pursues its mission with nation-wide wreath-laying events amid the holiday season, and year-round educational outreach inviting all Americans to appreciate our freedoms and the cost at which they are delivered. Specially designated wreaths for the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, Space Force and POW/MIA will be placed on memorials during a ceremony that will be coordinated simultaneously at over participating locations all across the Country and overseas. In 2021, more than 2.4 million veteran wreaths were placed on headstones at 3,137 participating cemeteries around the country in honor of the service and sacrifices made for our freedoms, with each name said out loud. More than 525 truckloads of wreaths were delivered across the country by hundreds of volunteer professional truck drivers. The truck full of Remembrance Wreaths will be arriving on Thursday, December 15 and will be escorted through Lakeport at noon to Hartley Cemetery where 800 wreaths will be unloaded. Join in and watch from the sidewalks along Main St. Please bring your patriotic spirit to this welcome.
Take an hour amid the hustle and bustle of this holiday season and bring your families to attend one of these heart felt ceremonies on Saturday, December 17 where we will remember and honor our veterans and teach our children the value the sacrifices that have been made and help lay the wreaths. Come place a wreath.

Clearlake Bassmasters recruiting new members
The Clearlake Bassmasters, a service organization started in 1991, is dedicated to conserving the fishery and wildlife at Clearlake California and providing scholarships to the local high school graduating classes in our community. We raise funds by providing a release boat to the many bass tournaments on the lake throughout the year and charging a minimal fee for this valuable service. The release boat is staffed by members of the Club who volunteer their time. The Club also serves the community by educating its members and guests on the importance of conserving and protecting the lake and its flora and fauna to preserve this great resource for generations to come. To join the Club email Clearlakebassmasters@gmail.com or call Steve Peckham at 510-776-2112

The Redbud Audubon Society will present a comprehensive Bird Identification program on Thursday Dec. 15, starting at 7 p.m. The program will be presented on Zoom by Donna Mackiewicz who is an avid birder and naturalist. The program is in preparation for the annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC)
To register for the program, click on the registration link on the homepage at www.redbudaudubon.org. The link will be sent on the day of the presentation.
The Redbud Audubon Society will conduct its 48th annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) on Saturday, Dec. 17. The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is a traditional project of Audubon societies around the country.
Previous participants have been sent information about meeting times and places by the count organizers, Brad and Kathy Barnwell, but new participants are welcome. They can meet at either Anderson Marsh State Historic Park or Clear Lake State Park at 8 a.m. or may participate in smaller individual groups. Email redbud.audubon@gmail.com to reserve your spot or to ask about participating in a smaller group within the count circle.
National Audubon has been holding a Christmas Bird Count for 125 years. The official count period usually starts around the middle of December and ends the first week of January. Local Audubon Societies can decide what day they conduct their counts within this time frame. Every individual bird and species encountered during the day is recorded. Each count group has a designated circle of 15 miles in diameter and tries to cover as much ground as possible within a certain period of time.
Count volunteers follow specified routes through the designated 15-mile (24-km) diameter circle, counting every bird they see or hear all day. It’s not just a species tally—all birds are counted all day, giving an indication of the total number of birds in the circle that day.
The data collected by each count group are then sent to the National Audubon Headquarters in New York and is made available online. Scientists rely on the remarkable trend data of Audubon’s CBC to better understand how birds and the environment are faring throughout North America – and what needs to be done to protect them.
