WINDSOR — Windsor banked in a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left in regulation to tie the score, but the Middletown Mustangs outscored the Jaguars 7-0 in the extra period for a 40-33 non-league varsity girls basketball win on Monday night in Windsor.
Middletown takes an 8-3 record into its winter break and won’t play again until Jan. 5 at St. Helena as North Central League I play resumes. The Mustangs won their first two league games earlier this month.
“I’m going to give them a week off to get healthy,” Middletown head coach Roxi Hoogendoorn said of her seven-strong squad that has been battling injuries and illness for the past month. “We were back to seven tonight, which was real nice. The girls were happy to have subs.”
Middletown led nearly the entire way before Windsor rallied back. When the Mustangs left Jaguars’ best shooter open as the final seconds ticked off the clock in regulation, they paid the price.
However, the overtime was all Middletown.
“We dominated,” Hoogendoonr said.
Amanda Hart’s free throw put Middletown ahead to stay. Mia Hoogendoorn scored four of her team-leading 11 points in the overtime, including two free throws, and Skylar Williams had the Mustangs’ other two points.
“We made some free throws,” Hoogendoorn said. “They were in foul trouble and we took advantage of that.”
Williams and Hart both scored nine points in the win. Jaidyn Brown added six.
Kamryn Atkins led the Mustangs with 14 rebounds and Hart pulled down nine. Williams had a team-best five steals while Hoogendoorn and Brown finished with three each.
Hoogendoorn said she was pleased with her team’s final outing in 2022.
“We haven’t played in a week and we went on the road and got a win,” Hoogendoorn said.
In the junior varsity game, missed layups and a 1-for-11 night at the free-throw line hurt Middletown in a 36-21 loss to Windsor.
“We missed a lot of layups and free throws,” Middletown head coach Jamie Burns said. “Overall it was a good game and honestly I’m very happy with how they played regardless of the scoreboard. Layups and free throws win games … if we can do that we’ll be in good shape.”
Windsor led 16-13 at halftime.
“We came out ready to play,” Burns said. “We full-court pressed them the whole game.”
Windsor’s defense took a toll on Middletown as well.
“They play phenomenal defense,” Burns said of the Jaguars.
Harley Holley’s eight points led Middletown and Caylee Saelor had five.
