PITTSBURG — Dominick Clark and Eli Moreno of the Middletown High School boys wrestling team won their respective weight classes Saturday at the Pittsburg Pirate Invitational in Pittsburg. They were among six Mustangs to medal at the tournament.

Clark, competing at 120 pounds, went 3-0 on the day, beating wrestlers who would go on to place second, third and fourth. He improved to 9-1 on the season.

Moreno won the 170-pound weight class, including a first-round pin in the championship match.

Steven Peterson placed second at 220 pounds, his only loss coming in the final seconds of his championship match.

David Sypnicki (145 pounds), California Howland (182 pounds) and Kayden Menzio (113 pounds) brought home third-place medals.

Sypnicki’s only loss came to a returning North Coast Section medalist. He bounced back with two straight wins in the consolation bracket.

Howland, who bumped up a weight class, ended up going 4-1 with four pins. His only loss came to the eventual 182-pound champion.

Menzio won his first match before losing to the eventual 113-pound champion. He answered with back-to-back wins in the consolation bracket, coming from behind to win both matches by fall.

Middletown placed fourth as a team despite bringing only six wrestlers to the tournament.

Other Middletown wrestlers attended the Michael Kroppmann Invitational on Saturday at Clear Lake High School in Lakeport.

Third-place finishes went to Richard Ramos at 126 pounds, Joe Cortez at 132 pounds and JJ Gerst at 220 pounds.

Placing fourth were Kelby Shook at 138 pounds and Tyler Torres at 152 pounds.

Edson Aguilar-Lepiz was fifth at 132 pounds.

Middletown’s boys will send a small contingent to the Lou Bronzan Invitational on Dec. 28 in Brentwood. Middletown’s girls, who the weekend off, return to action Wednesday in Albany.
