ALBANY — Continuing a string of strong tournament showings this season, the Middletown High School girls wrestling sqaud placed second Wednesday at the Albany Tournament, led by weight division winners Nicole Pyzer and Taylor Thompson.

Middletown finished second with 85 points, trailing only Windsor (125) in the team standings. Hayward came in third with 58.

The Lady Mustangs have now finished third or higher and brought home trophies from all four of the tournaments they’ve entered this season. They previously placed second at American Canyon, first in Orland and third in Pittsburg.

Pyzer went 3-0 with all of her wins by fall at 101 pounds. She scored quick pins in her first two matches before pinning her finals opponent in the second round.

Thompson, competing at 131 pounds, also went 3-0 with three pins, all of them in the first round.

“She was commended multiple times for her quickness and tenacity,” Middletown head coach Brian Hunt said.

Second-place medals to Sophie Yebra at 101 pounds and Caterina Barriga at 106 pounds. Yebra went 2-1 and her only loss was to teammate Pyzer in the finals. She didn’t allow a point in her first two matches.

Barriga’s only loss came in overtime to an opponent she lost to earlier this month.

“It was an amazing match and Cat will hopefully get another shot at the girl in the upcoming weeks,” Hunt said.

Krystal Ocken picked up a third-place medal at 170 pounds, her only loss to the eventual tournament champion by 7-3 decision. Ocken finished the day 3-1.

Middletown returns to action next Wednesday at the Brittany David Invitational at Liberty High School in Brentwood. Middletown’s boys compete in the Lou Bronzan Invitational beginning next Thursday in Brentwood.
