FORT BRAGG — The annual Vern Piver Holiday Tournament for varsity boys and girls basketball teams tips off Wednesday and runs through Friday at Fort Bragg High School.

Among the eight boys and eight girls teams participating this year are the Clear Lake and Upper Lake boys and girls squad.

Boys

Clear Lake’s boys open tournament play Wednesday morning against Orland at 11 a.m., an interesting first-round matchup given that many of the athletes who will be on the court squared off earlier this month in the 5-A Northern Regional Championship game in football. Upper Lake follows at 2 p.m. with a game against Cristo Rey De La Salle of Oakland.

Other first-round games have Making Waves (San Francisco) playing Las Plumas (Oroville) and Trinity (Weaverville) taking on Fort Bragg.

The Clear Lake-Orland and Upper Lake-Cristo Rey victors advances to Thursday’s winner’s semifinal round at 12:30 p.m. while the losers meet in the consolation semifinals at 9:30 a.m.

Clear Lake is 5-3 entering tournament play while Upper Lake is 4-5.

The Cardinals beat Potter Valley 71-37 a year ago in opening-round action before pulling out of the tournament after a player tested positive for COVID-19.

Girls

Clear Lake (3-2), idle for two weeks, faces Windsor in a girls first-round game at 9:30 a.m. Upper Lake (9-1) plays Fortuna in another opening-round game at 12:30 p.m.

Other first-round games match Del Norte (Crescent City) against Trinity and Durham against Fort Bragg.

The Clear Lake-Windsor and Upper Lake-Fortuna winners play Friday at 5 p.m. in the winner’s semifinal round. The losers square off in the consolation semifinals at 11 a.m.
