BRENTWOOD — Upper Lake High School freshman wrestler Lexy Peregrina went 2-1 with two falls while placing second in the 150-pound division Wednesday during the Brittany David Invitational at Liberty High School in Brentwood.

Peregrina, the No. 2 seed, suffered her only loss in the championship match to No. 1 seed Avangeline Turner of Davis High School, who won by fall. While it was their first meeting at the high school level, the two wrestlers squared off in April at the Reno Worlds where Peregrina won.

“We knew coming into the match she was here for revenge,” said Upper Lake High School head coach Eddie Peregrina. “I told Lexy that one little mistake is all it takes at this level for the opponent to capitalize on and Turner did just that.”

Added Upper Lake’s coach, “It’s the little things that are costing us in big matches. We learn and grow from each loss.”

Peregrina is 13-3 on the season.

“We have a lot of minor adjustments to do but she is right on track,” Peregrina said of his daughter’s progression this season.

All three of Peregrina’s losses are to state-ranked wrestlers who are also nationally ranked.

Upper Lake’s boys wrestle Thursday in the Lou Bronzan Invitational, which also takes place at Liberty High School in Brentwood.
