Middletown’s Clark earns second-place medal

Ranked North Coast Section 120-pounder goes 3-1 at Lou Bronzan Invitational

BRENTWOOD — Dominic Clark of the Middletown High School boys wrestling team captured second place at 120 pounds on Friday during the final day of the Lou Bronzan Invitational at Liberty High School in Brentwood.

Clark went 3-1 and is currently ranked seventh in the North Coast Section although his ranking should improve after his runner-up finish in Brentwood. His only loss was to a returning section champion and state medalist.

David Sypnicki added a seventh-place finish at 145 pounds, going 4-2 during the tournament. He is currently ranked eight in the section.

Middletown’s boys are home Friday and Saturday to host the annual Dennis Jensen Invitational.

Middletown girls

Middletown’s girls were in action Thursday at the Brittany David Invitational, also held at Liberty High School in Brentwood. Cat Barriga led the team with a fourth-place finish at 106 pounds, going 2-2 on the day.

Sophie Yebra, the No. 7 seed at 101 pounds, upset the No. 2 seed in the quarterfinals and went on to finish 3-2, good for fifth place.

Nicole Pyzer added a sixth-place finish at 101 pounds, going 2-2, and Taylor Thompson finished seventh at 131 pounds.

Middletown’s girls return to action Friday and Saturday at the Napa Invitational while Middletown’s JV girls are home Friday and Saturday for the annual Dennis Jensen Invitational.
