KELSEYVILLE — With every weight class filled, the Middletown High School wrestling team beat Kelseyville 42-23 and Upper Lake 48-30 in a Coastal Mountain Conference tri-meet Wednesday evening at Kelseyville High School.

“We didn’t wrestle our best, we made a few little mistakes that we need to fix, but if that’s the worst thing we have to worry about, we’re in good shape,” Middletown head coach Brian Hunt said. “I’ll take 2-0 any day.”

Most of Middletown’s team points came on forfeits against both Kelseyville and Upper Lake.

Against Kelseyville, Middletown winners, all by fall, were Dom Clark at 120 pounds by first-round pin; Joseph Cortez at 132 pounds by second-round pin; California Howland at 170 pounds by first-round pin; and J.J. Gerst by second-round pin at 285 pounds.

Against Upper Lake, Clark won by first-round pin at 120 pounds, Howland won by second-round pin at 182 pounds and David Sypnicki won by first-round pin at 152 pounds.

While not all of Middletown’s wrestlers are at 100 percent, according to Hunt, Middletown’s veteran coach said the Mustangs are “in a good place” as they enter the 2023 conference race.

“I like where we’re sitting this year,” Hunt said.

Middletown’s wrestlers, boys and girls, have a busy weekend ahead. On Friday, the girls and junior varsity boys compete in the Sutter Tournament. On Saturday, the girls head to the Corning Invitational while the varisty boys compete in the Armijo Invitational in Fairfield.

The Mustangs’ next conference tri-meet is next Wednesday at home against Clear Lake and St. Helena.
