SUTTER — Middletown High School’s Nicole Pyzer and Cat Barriga were a combined 8-0 with eight pins while winning first-place medals Friday in the girls bracket of the Sutter Invitational wrestling tournament.

Pyzer, the No. 3 seed at 101 pounds, won all three of her matches by pin.

“:She busted that bracket wide open,” Middletown head coach Brian Hunt said.

Barriga, competing in the round-robin 106-pound division, went 5-0 with five pins.

Isabel Cortez went 2-1 at 143 pounds, losing only to the eventual champion, to finish third. She exited the tournament early as a precaution with a minor foot injury.

“We were just being cautious,” Hunt said of Cortez.

JV boys

In the tournament’s junior varsity boys division where medals went to the top three finishers in each weight class, the Mustangs didn’t come away with any medals but that wasn’t the Mustangs’ goal, according to Hunt.

“We’re not chasing JV medals, we’re after mat time for our wrestlers,” Hunt said.

“The kids wrestled real well,” Hunt said. “We brought home some wins.”

Richard Ramos went 3-1 at 120 pounds as did Joe Cortez at 132 pounds. Also going 3-1 were JJ Gerst and Marlon Martin del Campo at 220 pounds.

Tyler Torres finished 2-1 at 152 pounds while Kelby Shook went 1-1 at 138 pounds.
