KELSEYVILLE — Idle for a month, the Kelseyville High School boys soccer team finally opened its North Central League I schedule with a 5-0 victory over the Cloverdale Eagles on Thursday night in Kelseyville.

Luis Valdovinos scored two goals, one in each half, as Kelseyville improved to 3-0 on the season under first-year head coach KC White.

“We had to shake off a lot of rust,” White said. “Cloverdale’s defensive line was very aggressive and we had at least 10 offsides called.”

Kelseyville kept the ball on Cloverdale side of the field nearly the entire game and had a 2-0 lead at halftime on the strength of goals by Tony Villa-Gomez, assisted by Diego Rico, and Valdovinos, assisted by Angel Garcia.

The Knights put three more goals into the net in the second half. Jovan Pantaleon made it 3-0, Garcia’s penalty kick pushed Kelseyville’s lead to 4-0, and Valdovinos’ second goal of the game, assisted by Sebastian Cacho, rounded out the scoring. Villa-Gomez assisted on Pantaleon’s goal.

Outside of Kelseyville’s goal scorers, and especially Valdovinos, White said he received solid play from defensive-mid Ricardo Garcia and wing Alex Cabrera, who came off the bench.

“Luis, he stood out to me,” White said of Valdovinos.

“I did get everybody into the game, which I was happy about,” White said.

Though Kelseyville’s natural playing surface has been battered by rain the last two weeks, the field conditions “were OK,” according to White.

Kelseyville is on the road Saturday at 6 p.m. to play Roseland University Prep. The game will take place on Sonoma Academy’s home field in Santa Rosa.
