Girls win small school team title at Corning, Sypnicki is MVP at Fairfield

CORNING — Middletown High School entered only three girls in the Corning Invitational on Saturday and still came away with the team title for small schools as all three wrestlers came home with medals.

Taylor Thompson won the 128-pound weight class while Cat Barriga and Nicole Pyzer finished second and third, respectively, at 106 pounds.

At Fairfield, the Middletown boys wrestling team took part in the Armijo Invitational and came away with two medals, including a first by 145-pounder David Sypnicki, who was voted the tournament’s most valuable lightweight.

California Howland added a second-place medal at 170 pounds.

Schedule

Middletown hosts St. Helena and Clear Lake in a Coastal Mountain Conference tri-meet on Wednesday. On Saturday, the boys head to the Puma Classic at Maria Carrillo High School in Santa Rosa while the girls are off to the Del Oro Tournament in Loomis.
