KELSEYVILLE — On a cold January evening, the Kelseyville Knights and Healdsburg Greyhounds locked up in a non-league varsity girls soccer game that was dominated by defense, with the visiting ‘Hounds prevailing 3-0 at Kelseyville High School.
Welcome to winter soccer.
“It was cold out there,” Kelseyville head coach Patrick Mick said.
While the Knights (2-4) had a handful of scoring opportunities, they couldn’t find the net against the Greyhounds (6-2-1).
“We had a couple of good scoring opportunities, but we just missed,” Mick said.
Kelseyville spent much of the game on the defensive. Healdsburg scored two breakaway goals in the first half and added a 30-yard direct kick in the second half.
Mick said several Kelseyville players distinguished themselves on defense, especially senior captain Sherlyn Macias, a center-mid.
“She was all over the field as usual,” Mick said. “She was fantastic.”
Freshman keeper Kassandra Rodriguez was another standout.
“She made some great saves,” Mick added.
Also contributing strong defensive play were starters Abigail Ortego, Mya Ogo and Ximoara Arias and reserves Holley Hoefler and Karentia Romero.
Kelseyville’s junior varsity and varsity squads travel to St. Helena on Thursday as North Central League I action resumes. The JV game begins at 4 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
