KELSEYVILLE — Lower Lake High School beat Kelseyville 42-28 in the annual battle for The Shield on Wednesday night during a Coastal Mountain Conference tri-meet involving Cloverdale at Kelseyville High School.

“Our whole team fought hard,” Lower Lake head coach Troy Dahneke said. “The sophomores stood out the most,” Dahneke added of 134-pounder Blake Hill, 128-pounder Roberto Chavez and Michael Williams, who wrestled up a weight class at 170 pounds.

Hill, Chavez and Williams all won by pin.

Another Lower Lake winner was Adam Viramontes, who wrestled up from 220 pounds to win in the heavyweight division.

“I am especially proud of this young man,” Dahneke said. “He lost his father last Friday. Adam left everything on the mat, except the victory. That one’s for you dad.”

Lower Lake also beat Cloverdale 18-15.

Lower Lake’s team also had two girls in action during the match. Hanahi Baracio lost by pin to her Cloverdale opponent and dropped a 14-2 major decision to her Kelseyville opponent.

Baracio is 11-1 this season against other girls, including a first-place finish earlier this month at the annual Dennis Jensen Invitational in Middletown.

“She’s looking really, really good,” Lower Lake girls coach Danny Cuellar said. “She’s working hard.”

Also in action was Marobol Myers, who lost by pin to Kelseyville’s Ari Fossa.

“I’m super proud of her work ethic,” Cuellar said.

Myers placed second earlier this month at the annual Jensen Invitational in Middletown.
