Mediacom announces extended deadline for World Class Scholarship applications

Mediacom Communications is extending the application deadline for its scholarship program, Mediacom World Class Scholars. In its 22nd consecutive year, the program will award $1,000 World Class Scholarships to 60 high school seniors planning to obtain further education.

Scholarship applications must be submitted by Feb. 28, 2023. The deadline was extended from an earlier date and high school seniors are encouraged to apply. Mediacom’s World Class Scholarship applications are available online: mediacomworldclass.com.

Applicants do not have to be Mediacom customers but must live in areas where Mediacom’s fiber-rich broadband network delivers Gigabit-speed internet service. Recipients will be selected from the 22 states where Mediacom’s residential customers reside. A complete list of communities in Mediacom service areas is included with the online application.

Forest Service to host two in-person hiring events

The Forest Service is hiring for wildland firefighter positions into hiring permanent and seasonal, hand crews, engine crews, hotshot crews, and more. The Forest Service is holding two in-person hiring events to fill approximately 400 wildland firefighter permanent, permanent seasonal, and temporary positions. Join us in Fresno, CA January 24 to 25, 2023, at the Double Tree Hotel 9am – 5pm (PST) and in Redding, CA February 14 to 15, 2023, at the Red Lion Hotel 9am – 5pm (PST). Applicants are invited to come and meet regional fire staff, get application help, learn about the benefits of working for the Forest Service, and may leave with a tentative offer.

Applicants do not need to attend the hiring event to apply. Those attending may pre-register to reserve a spot and skip the lines.

Jobs will be posted on USAJOBS.gov using the direct hire authority. Review the job announcement carefully for deadlines and required information to include in your application. Employment start dates may vary.

Equitable economic development across California webinar

In its report, Equitable Economic Development across California, the Little Hoover Commission urges California to do more to facilitate inclusive regional economic development. At noon on Friday, Jan. 20, 2023, the Commission will hold a webinar to discuss this call for action.

The Commission will be joined by representatives from the Central Valley Community Foundation, Inland Economic Growth & Opportunity (IEGO), and Uplift San Bernardino, who will share their perspective on inclusive regional economic development, on California’s recent steps to encourage equitable regional development, and on what more state government can do to support regional economies, especially in California’s less prosperous regions.

LUCERNE

Community meeting scheduled for Thursday

A community meeting is scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Lucerne School Multipurpose room located at 3351 Country Club Drive in Lucerne. The meeting will be moderated by Kurt Mckelvey and on the agenda is discussion of the Scotts Valley/LCOE partnership to use the Lucerne Hotel building for housing out of county homeless youth. Discussion of the need for self determination for the community of Lucerne and of neglected county maintenance issues are also on the agenda.
