UKIAH — Kelseyville High School’s varsity girls soccer team ran into a buzz saw on Saturday, falling 9-0 to the Ukiah Wildcats in non-league action at Ukiah.
Ukiah improved to 11-5 on the season while Kelseyville fell to 2-6.
“It’s rough playing these huge schools,” Kelseyville head coach Patrick Mick said. “They (Wildcats) have an elite team this year.”
Despite the challenge of playing a school several times Kelseyville’s size, Mick said his players never backed off.
“The girls played hard, I’m so proud of them,” he said. “We squeezed out every ounce we had.”
Standouts for the Knights were freshman keeper Kassandra Rodriguez, freshman forward Angelina Vazquez, and senior Guadalupe Fernandez.
Rodriguez made 16 saves.
“Even the Ukiah coaches were marveling at her great play,” Mick said. “Vazquez played her tail off. Fernandez played hard and had a great game.”
The Wildcats led 6-0 at halftime.
Ukiah also won the junior varsity game 2-0, scoring both of its goals in the first half.
Mick said the play on defense of freshmen Hope Luevano, Xiomara Arias and Evelin Valdovinos stood out.
“They left it all on the field,” Mick added.
The Knights host Roseland University Prep in a North Central League I game on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Kelseyville’s JV boys and girls teams travel to St. Helena on Wednesday. The varsity girls are home again Thursday for a league game against Sonoma Academy at 4 p.m.
