UPPER LAKE — A 27-2 first quarter carried the Upper Lake Cougars to a 58-13 victory over the Calistoga Wildcats in North Central League II varsity girls basketball action Friday night in Upper Lake.

Upper Lake, now 6-0 in league play, improved to 17-1 overall with its 10th straight victory. The Cougars face another undefeated NCL II team, the Sonoma Academy Coyotes (6-0, 12-2) twice next week. The two teams meet Monday in Santa Rosa and again Friday in Upper Lake.

“We’re really passing the ball well and trusting each other,” Upper Lake co-head coach Annie Pivniska-Petrie said of her team’s latest win.

Upper Lake’s press and pressure defense overwhelmed the Wildcats (2-3, 3-8).

“Calistoga is young, really young,” Pivniska-Petrie said. “They definitely improved since the first time we played.”

Upper Lake opened its league schedule Dec. 6 with a 54-6 win at Calistoga.

Taylar Minnis led the Cougars with 14 points on Friday night. Nya Marcks joined her in double digits with 11 points, Kali Minnis added nine points and Madison Noble had eight.

Upper Lake lost Jayme Zimmerschied to a rolled ankle during warmups.

In the junior varsity game, Upper Lake used a 27-point third quarter to pull away from and beat the Calistoga Wildcats 55-9, preserving the Cougars’ perfect league (3-0) and season (11-0) records.

Ashyln Wurm scored 12 of her team-leading 16 points in the third quarter while Ashlyn Rhodes had seven of her 15 in the quarter. Rainy Minton added seven points in the lopsided win.

Upper Lake had a 22-5 halftime lead.

The Cougars hit the road Monday for a league game against Sonoma Academy, part of a four-game set between the two schools. The JV girls game tips off at 3:30 p.m.
