PETALUMA — Aiden Rivas, Abraham Rico and Ricardo Garcia all scored goals as the Kelseyville Knights snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the St. Vincent Mustangs in non-league varsity boys soccer action Thursday afternoon in Petaluma.
“After a few rough outings we turned the page,” Kelseyville head coach KC white said. “We talked before the game that this was the start of a new season for us and we’re 1-0 in our new season.”
Kelseyville (4-3) snapped a 1-1 halftime time near the 55th minute on Rico’s goal.
“It was after a turnover,” White said. “St. Vincent’s keeper kicked it right to him. He dribbled it a couple of times and scored.”
Ricardo Garcia followed with a goal about five minutes later with an assist from Luis Valdovinos to make it 3-1.
“In the second half we were much more aggressive,” White said. “We had the ball on their side of the field for 38 of the 40 minutes.”
Kelseyville grabbed a 1-0 lead late in the first half on a Rico goal that was also assisted by Valdovinos. St. Vincent pulled even in the 40th minute.
“It was a little bit of a mistake on our part,” White said of St. Vincent’s goal. “We had a little bit of mix-up on the back line.”
The Mustangs’ goal was their only real shot of the game, according to White, compared to 12 shots by the Knights.
Kelseyville also lost a goal on what White said was a questionable offsides call.
“We legitimately should have won by more,” White said. “We didn’t take advantage of a couple of opportunities.”
White praised the play of Omar De La Cruz and Angel Garcia.
The Knights and St. Vincent go at it again Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. in Kelseyville.
