KELSEYVILLE — Kiara Rivas and Kathryn Wheelan scored first-half goals to give Kelseyville a 2-1 lead, but the St. Helena Saints rallied to beat the Knights 5-2 in North Central League I varsity girls soccer action Tuesday night in Kelseyville.
“Our girls played so hard, they wanted it,” Kelseyville head coach Patrick Mick said of his team’s season finale, which included a pre-game ceremony to honor the team’s six seniors — captains Rivas, Guadalupe Fernandez and Sherlyn Macias as well as Kassandra Boyd, Karen Gutierrez and Holly Hoefler.
St. Helena pulled even at 2-2 on a penalty kick before taking a 3-2 lead right before halftime. Kelseyville had a penalty kick of its own, but missed it wide left.
The Saints scored early in the second half and held that 4-2 lead until the final seconds of the game when they picked up their final goal.
Mick praised the play of defenders Mya Ogo, Xiomara Arias, Abigail Ortega and Regina Rico and freshman keeper Madeline Borghesani.
“She made 10 saves,” Mick said of Borghesani. “She played great.”
Mick also gave high marks to the play of forward Macias.
Kelseyville took a 1-0 lead on a Rivas 25-yard free kick. After St. Helena tied it, Wheelan scored with an assist from Rico to put the Knights back in front.
The Knights close their inaugural winter soccer season at 2-5-1 in league and 3-9-1 overall.
St. Helena won the junior varsity game 1-0.
