KELSEYVILLE — In its first full season of winter soccer, the Kelseyville High School varsity boys soccer team has qualified for the North Coast Section Division 4 playoffs. That’s the good news.

The bad news is the Knights are headed to Santa Rosa on Wednesday night to play No. 1 seed Cardinal Newman in an opening-round game.

Kelseyville drew the No. 16 seed in the 16-team Division 4 field, which was announced Sunday.

The Knights, who played fall soccer in previous years, are the first Lake County high school to switch to winter soccer, which is the trend across the state. They went 6-5-1 overall under head coach KC White, including a 1-4-1 mark in the ultra-competitive NCL I winter standings against the likes of Roseland University Prep of Santa Rosa and St. Helena.

RUP (11-2-4) drew the No. 3 seed in the playoff field while St. Helena (7-6-3) is No. 9.

The Kelseyville-Cardinal Newman winner advances to Saturday’s quarterfinal round against the winner of first-round game between St. Helena and No. 8 seed Piedmont. RUP hosts No. 14 seed Salesian (Richmond) in another first-round game.

The top three seeds in the Division 4 field are Cardinal Newman (8-4-5), University High School (9-5-5) of San Francisco, and RUP.

Division 4 semifinals are Feb. 22 and the section championship game takes place either Feb. 24 or Feb. 25.
