UPPER LAKE — Upper Lake High School’s two state tournament qualifiers in wrestling, North Coast Section champions Maddy Young at 131 pounds and Lexy Peregrina at 150 pounds, are the No. 7 seeds in their respective weight classes as the CIF State Girls Championships prepare to open in Bakersfield.
The top eight wrestlers in each weight class earn coveted state medals and both Young, a senior, and Peregrina, a freshman, are favored to do so with their seventh seeds. Of course, both are gunning for state championships, which Upper Lake’s Adriana Lopez accomplished in 2019 at 121 pounds, the first county wrestler or athlete in any sport to win a state title.
Young
Young opens Thursday against Eliza Goodwin of Rodriguez, the San Joaquin Section fourth-place finisher. The Young-Goodwin winner draws the winner between Kayla Ganac of Los Osos and Kyli Stanley of Granite Hill in the second round. Ganac is the Southern Section fourth-place finisher while Stanley is the San Diego section runner-up.
The highest seed on Young’s half of the bracket is No. 2 Tegan Nguyen of Palm Desert, the Southern Section champion.
The No. 1 seed at 131 pounds is Taydem Khamjoi of Cesar Chavez, the San Joaquin Section champion.
Peregrina
Peregrina opens Thursday against Faith Vasquez of Livingston, the fifth-place finish in the San Joaquin Section. The Peregrina-Vasquez winner draws the winner between Maria Rodriguez and Melanie Hayslip in the second round. Rodriguez of Barstow is the Southern Section runner-up while Hayslip is the San Diego Section champion.
The highest seed on Peregrina’s side of the bracket is No. 2 Mikayla Lancaster of Gregori, the San Joaquin Section champion.
The No. 1 seed at 150 pounds is Johanna Foreman of Northview, the Southern Section champion.
Schedule
The CIF State Championships, a double-elimination event, run through Saturday at Mechanic Banks Arena.
