
LOWER LAKE — Members of the CORE Wrestling Club kept plenty busy last weekend while competing in both the Gladiator Brawl at Lower Lake High School and the California Folkstyle Championships in Fresno.
CORE sent 13 wrestlers to the Gladiator Brawl, including one, Richard Occhino, who finished first in two separate brackets. Team members brought home a total of eight firsts and three seconds while also finishing second as a team with 235.5 points.
Besides the two first-place medals won by Occhino, other firsts went to Jesse Saldana-Rivera, Amari Carr, James Newman, Tucker Heywood, Ryan Ramirez and Gerardo Rodriguez. Second-place medalists were Trey Thurman, Sampson Wetmore and Camden Wylie.
CORE also sent team member Travis Boyles to the California Folkstyle Championships in Fresno where he took third place out of 37 entrants in the Cadet 113-pound bracket.
CORE will be taking five wrestlers (Thurman, Carr, Rodriguez, Wylie and Newman) to the California Youth Folkstyle Championships this coming weekend in Fresno.
