MIDDLETOWN — Cooper Johnson drove the green on the 334-yard, par-4 12th hole Tuesday afternoon and two-putted for birdie, one of his three birdies on the day, as the Middletown Mustangs improved to 12-0 in the Coastal Mountain Conference South golf standings with a 341-376 victory over St. Helena at the par-72 Rooster Run Golf Club in Petaluma.

Johnson and teammate Blake Costlow, who had one birdie, both shot rounds of 84, which was one shot behind the day’s leader, Dom Williams of Middletown and his 83, which included one birdie. Bodhi Moore rounded out the Mustangs’ team scoring with a 90.

“He stayed consistent and struck the ball well today, he played the right club most of the day, “Middletown head coach Todd Williams said of Dom Williams. “We are tough to beat because our guys are all playing really well each week and putting in the extra work and it shows.”

“I really wanted to let Middletown see and play the course in a competitive setting,” said Kelseyville assistant head coach John Berry, who helped reschedule Tuesday’s match at Rooster Run after it was rained out earlier this season.

Rooster Run will host the opening round of the North Coast Section playoffs next month and Berry was determined to make sure the Mustangs as well as the other top players in the South, such as St. Helena’s Micah Meraz-Ha, were able to gain some course knowledge before the sectional tournament rolls around.

Meraz-Ha missed last week’s South match at Foxtail South in Rohnert Park so that he could attend a round of the Masters with his dad in Augusta, Georgia. The family won a gallery ticket for the prestigious event, the first of four majors on the PGA Tour.

Meraz-Ha’s round of 85 led St. Helena on Tuesday.

Technology, led by Sebastian Maurice’s 96, finished third with 419 strokes while Kelseyville was last with 471. Caleb Lopez led the young Knights with a 113 and teammate Julian Armas had 114.

The CMC South returns to action Thursday at Adams Springs Golf Course on Cobb Mountain with a 2 p.m. shotgun start.
