WILLITS — Lower Lake High School junior first baseman Rebecca Theodorou hit a grand slam during a 15-run first inning and later smacked a two-run home run as the Trojans routed the Willits Wolverines 22-1 in North Central League I softball action Tuesday afternoon in Willits.
Theodorou went 3-for-4 on the day with the two home runs and six RBIs.
“Not only that, but nothing gets by her at first base,” Lower Lake head coach Tara Downey said. “She’s my stone wall. She’s my golden egg.”
The game was called after four innings because of its lopsided nature. Lower Lake (2-8 league, 3-9 overall) followed up on its 15-run top of the first with four more runs in the second and three in the third, two of which scored on Theodorou’s second home run of the game.
“Both of them went over the fence in center field,” Downey said.
Lower Lake snapped a seven-game losing streak with its second league win this season over the Wolverines.
“We’ve been working really hard,” Downey said. “We have the capability to hit, we just need to work on our mindset.”
Theodorou now has three home runs in her last two games.
Marriah Perez went 3-for-3 with a double and Aliana Barnes went 3-for-4 with a double for Lower Lake.
Winning pitcher Keeley Parks worked all four innings, scattering six hits, striking out six and walking two.
Lower Lake plays a non-league game Wednesday against Fortuna at Mendocino College in Ukiah beginning at 1:30 p.m., part of a split doubleheader. Clear Lake faces Fortuna in the late game at 4 p.m.
In other NCL I action Tuesday:
Fort Bragg 8, Kelseyville 0
At Fort Bragg, Cassiti Baroni limited Kelseyville to a single hit while striking out 13 as the Timberwolves maintained their hold on second place in the league standings with a shutout victory over the Knights (5-4, 7-8), who had their four-game league winning streak snapped.
It’s the second straight shutout loss for the Knights, who dropped a 7-0 non-league decision to Hoopa and hard-throwing right-hander Tatianna Ray on Saturday in Ukiah. Ray struck out 16. The Knights had only one hit in that game as well.
Kat Wheelan broke up Baroni’s no-hitter with a leadoff double to left-center field in the fourth inning.
“I was going to have her bunt, she fouled it off and then hit a double,” Kelseyville head coach Julie Jackson said.
A pair of costly Knights errors led to two unearned Fort Bragg runs in the bottom of the first inning.
“That kind of set the tone for the game,” Jackson said.
Fort Bragg (7-2) added another run in the second, scored two more in the third and three in the fourth to go up 8-0.
Losing pitcher Jayden Paulich worked the first five innings before giving way to reliever Mya Ogo. Paulich struck out two and walked one.
The Knights are back on the road Friday to play Cloverdale (6-3) at 4 p.m.
Cloverdale 16, Clear Lake 1
At Lakeport, a 2-1 pitcher’s duel through five innings mushroomed into a full-blown rout over the final two innings as the Cloverdale Eagles scored five times in the top of the sixth and nine times in the seventh to beat the Clear Lake Cardinals.
About the only good news for Clear Lake was the return of pitcher Lilianna Cruz, who worked six-plus mostly effective innings in relief before running out of gas. Atiana Patino started the game but walked the only two batters she faced before leaving with a hand injury. Cruz worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first and limited Cloverdale to single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before the Eagles broke out in the sixth, Patino returned to start the seventh and again walked two batters before leaving the game. Stella Hill faced several batters without getting an out before Sierra Bruch, the team’s starting center fielder, relieved and got the final three outs.
“She pitched well,” Clear Lake head coach Scott Schaefers said of the return of Cruz, a hard-throwing junior left-hander who is recovering from a hip injury.
Cruz also had one of only three Clear Lake hits. Smart had a double and Grace Gomez singled home a run in the bottom of the second to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Clear Lake plays a non-league game against Fortuna on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Mendocino College in Ukiah, part of a split doubleheader. Fortuna plays Lower Lake in the early game at 1:30 p.m. The Cardinals remain on the road Friday to play Willits.
St. Helena 11, Middletown 1
At Middletown, St. Helena pitcher Tahlia Smith limited Middletown to three hits and struck out 13 as the league-leading Saints improved to 9-0 with a win over the Mustangs.
Smith also contributed at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and four runs scored.
St. Helena had a 9-0 lead before Middletown scored in the bottom of the fifth on Amanda Hart’s RBI double. Shaylyn Sims also doubled for the Mustangs (2-7, 3-7). Breanna Pyzer had the other Middletown hit.
Losing pitcher Brooklyn Wood allowed eight runs (two earned) in four innings, struck out four and walked three.
Middletown visits Lower Lake on Friday.
In other action Tuesday:
Upper Lake 13, Calistoga 2
At Calistoga, Ashlyn Wurm went 3-for4 with a RBI and Nya Marks went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Upper Lake Cougars past the Calistoga Wildcats in a five-inning NCL II game.
Aimee Schaefers pitched the first three innings for the victory, allowing two runs on two hits, striking out four and walking two. Marcks finished up with two scoreless innings of relief, striking out three and walking one.
Upper Lake (3-1) scored in every inning but the third, including four-run second and fourth innings.
The Cougars are home Friday to play Credo at 4 p.m.
