FORT BRAGG — Rather than sit through a second rain delay Tuesday afternoon in Fort Bragg, Lower Lake High School Mark Peterson decided to forfeit the Trojans’ varsity baseball game with the Timberwolves.
Fort Bragg was leading 5-0 in the top of the fourth inning and the Trojans (3-9 league, 7-12 overall) were batting with one out when the game was delayed a second time because of falling rain.
“We were down 5-0, so I decided to forefit the game,” Lower Lake head coach Mark Peterson said. “The field is soaked and I’m not bringing our team back up here, so I talked with my coaches and we decided to forfeit.”
The Timberwolves scored three times in the bottom of the first inning and added single runs in the second and third.
Fort Bragg (8-2, 10-6) is still mathematically alive in the North Central League I race although both of the team’s league losses are to NCL I leader Kelseyville (11-0), which was rained out Tuesday in St. Helena. The Knights’ magic number to clinch no worse than a tie for the league title is one (any combination of Kelseyville wins or Fort Bragg losses totaling one) and its magic number to clinch the outright championship is two.
Lower Lake hosts Potter Valley in a non-league game Thursday hoping to notch its first home win of the season. Lower Lake remains home Friday to play St. Helena in league action.
Fort Bragg hit the road Wednesday to play Willits and is away Friday to take on Clear Lake in Lakeport.
