RED BLUFF — Tyler Saunders of Hidden Valley Lake is a state champion after winning the bareback steer riding competition Saturday at the California High School Rodeo Association junior high championships in Red Bluff.

Saunders automatically qualifies to compete in the Nationals next month. He was one of four Lake County contests to reach the Short Go on Saturday, the final day of the four-day competition.

Alexis Yanez of Kelseyville ended up fifth in pole bending and fell just one place short of qualifying for the National team.

Stella Aleman of Clearlake finished seventh in barrel racing while Jadyn Owens of Middletown placed 10 in barrel racing.

Lake County sent nine people to the state finals.
