Lake County Flotilla children’s free life jacket give away
On Saturday, U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Auxiliary, Flotilla 08-08 of Lake County distributed free life jackets for children at the Konocti Bait Shack in Lucerne, California.
Owner John Larson provided a shady deck for the giveaway activity as well as cold drinking water. The Flotilla was assisted by the Konocti Women’s Service Club (KWSC) which made possible this free life jacket project.
The children were weighed and qualified Flotilla members fitted the proper size for each child and the parents were advised on the proper wearing of the life jacket. Whistles were attached to the life jackets and the child was instructed to blow it if they were in the water and needed help.
The Flotilla provided oil spill packets to owners of boats with instructions on the packets use.
Also, information pamphlets and brochures on Safe Boating practices were given out as well as children’s activity books.
The Flotilla and KWSC thanks the parents who were concerned about safety in the water for their children and attending this event. All were advised to play it safe: “Wear your life jackets.”

Senior Farmers’ Market nutrition program
This program enables seniors to purchase fruits, vegetables and other nutritious items with check booklets.
The California Department of Food and Agriculture teams up with California’s 33 Area Agencies on Aging to distribute check booklets to eligible seniors who will receive one booklet per year. Each booklet consists of 5 checks worth $10 each to be redeemed at certified farmers’ markets. Checks may be used to purchase fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, honey and cut herbs.
The program aims to increase low-income seniors’ consumption of agricultural commodities and encourages seniors to consider farmers’ markets as a regular source of wholesome nutrition. Approximately 370 certified farmers’ markets throughout the state have applied and been approved to participate in this program.
Seniors interested in participating in the program can find their local Area Agency on Aging by contacting Virginia Peeke at Virginia.Peeke@lakecountyca.gov or via phone at (707) 995-4652. The list and other information about the Senior Farmers’ Nutrition Program are also available online at www.cdfa.ca.gov/seniorfarmersmrktnutritionprgm/. No more beer sales at Lake County Fair from Rotary
It is with great disappointment that the Lakeport Rotary Club is announcing that we will no longer be able to serve beer at the Lake County Fair, something that we have done for well over 50 years. Beer sales at the fair had become our primary fundraiser for at least the last 25 years and based upon recent accountings we raised over $350,000 in the last 15 years alone.
We are proud to have been able to reinvest every dollar of that money into serving our Lake County communities. The ways we have done that are too numerous to mention, but some examples are student scholarships, many construction projects at such places as Clear Lake High School, the Lakeport Senior Center, Sutter-Lakeside Hospital and the Lake County Fairgrounds, and cash donations to hundreds of our fellow Lake County non-profit organizations to assist them in providing important services to thousands of Lake County residents.
We wish to thank each and every one of you who made all of that possible by stopping by one of our beer booths and buying a beer or two.
Unfortunately, the current management of the Lake County Fair decided to award the contract to a private vendor from Ukiah and we respect their right to do so. However, the loss of revenue has obviously significantly reduced our ability to provide “Service Above Self,” which the Rotary motto. We are working hard to try to fill the gap by creating new and exciting fundraisers, including a “virtual beer booth,” which will allow our prior beer customers to continue to support our endeavors by purchasing “virtual beers” online. Details on that fundraiser will be out soon. Thanks again for all your support.
