Lakeport Buzz Cut Challenge exceeds $2500 goal – And keeps growing
The Lakeport Buzz Cut Challenge has rocketed past the goal of $2,500 and continues to raise even more for St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital. With that, Steve Short from Lakeport Tire and Auto Service will get a buzz cut during this Friday’s concert in Library Park, and may even be joined by some additional buzz cut participants. The Summer Concert Series wraps up this Friday, and will feature the extremely popular band Funky Dozen.
You might be wondering exactly what is The Lakeport Buzz Cut Challenge? The Lakeport Buzz Cut Challenge is to generate awareness around the fundraising effort to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “When several people asked us where they could get cold water during the summer concerts, we decided it would be a chance to highlight the amazing work done at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital”, said Steve Short, founder of The Lakeport Buzz Cut Challenge. “We’ve had coolers full of ice cold water at the Lakeport Tire and Auto Service booth during the concerts and we simply asked people to make a donation to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital. It has absolutely touched my heart to see the outpouring of donations, and to hear so many stories from local residents whose lives have been affected by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.”
To make it more interesting, Steve Short announced that if the donations exceeded $2,500 he would get a buzz cut on stage during the last concert of the year this Friday, August 18. As a result, the Lakeport Buzz Cut Challenge was born. “The moment of truth has arrived” said Steve Short, whose hair will be buzzed off Friday night.
So, why get a buzz cut to raise money? The answer is to show support for the thousands of kids at St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, many of whom lose their hair as a result of cancer and other treatments at the hospital. Steve said “If those children can go through those treatments and lose their hair, then a buzz cut to help raise a little money is the least I can do”.
Michaela Wright from Locals Barber Salon in Lakeport will “do the honor” of giving Steve a buzz cut during the intermission of the last concert of the year this Friday. Michaela will set up a chair in front of the stage and will buzz away at Steve’s hair. “I’ve had several other guys say they’ll also get a buzz cut if we hit the $2,500 goal, but I suspect most of them will chicken out at the last second” said Steve.
BiCoastal Media puts on the Summer Concert Series in Lakeport’s Library Park every Friday night from June 16 through August 18. Lakeport Tire and Auto Service has been a Major Sponsor of the Summer Concert Series for the past two years, along with a number of other local businesses.
