Coastal Cleanup Month maximizes efforts to protect community waterways and coastlines

Caltrans, through its Stormwater Campaign “Let’s Change This to That,” is partnering with the California Coastal Commission for the second year in a row to advocate for cleaner coastlines and pollutant-free water during September’s Coastal Cleanup Month. Numerous cleanup activities will take place statewide throughout the month with a goal of preserving the natural splendor of California’s coastline and ensuring that both inland and coastal area residents understand their impact on community waterways, such as lakes, rivers, creeks, and the ocean.

Trash, litter and other debris accumulate during drier months while Californians travel, recreate and spend more time outdoors. Stormwater generated by the first heavy rains of the season wash untreated waste and debris into local rivers, creeks, lakes, and the ocean. Beyond encouraging trash collection, the Stormwater Campaign encourages individuals to take preventative actions to stop pollutants at the source, such as picking up after pets, properly disposing of waste, maintaining vehicles to prevent leaks and mitigate wear, and much more. These thoughtful behaviors contribute significantly to maintaining water quality and decreasing pollution.

During the first year of the partnership in 2022, the California Coastal Commission found that statewide volunteer participation on Coastal Cleanup Day was up nearly 25 percent. The partnership aims to build on that success and encourage even more Californians to join a cleanup effort.

The California Coastal Commission in partnership with Caltrans and other community-based organizations are holding the 39th annual Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 23, by hosting hundreds of local events statewide, including, but not limited to:

American River Parkway Foundation’s Great American River Cleanup at Discovery Park (Sacramento)

The Lake County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual 5K Fun Run/Walk and Health Expo on Saturday, September 9, proudly sponsored by Sutter Lakeside Hospital and Adventist Health Clear Lake. The event will kick off that day at 8 a.m. with a 5K Fun Run that will start and end in Austin Park in Clearlake. After the Fun Run/Walk, the entire community is invited to enjoy the Health Expo, featuring 25 vendors offering food and health-related goods, information booths, and demonstrations. There will be three fitness classes offered beginning at 9:30 a.m. The Expo will take place on Lakeshore Drive, which will be closed between Olympic Drive and Division Avenue, allowing Expo-goers direct access to Austin Beach. Food vendors include Dave the Taco Guy, The Noodle Bowl, Mother Lovin’ from the Oven, and Living Being Farms. The Children’s Museum of Art and Science, Blue Zones Project, Lake County Parks & Trails, NorCal 4 Health, and the State on Developmental Disabilities are among the information booths that will be in attendance. Konocti Bicycles, Dew Diligence Skin Company, and BlueCooper Permanent Jewelry are a few of the vendors that will attend.

The Lake County Chamber of Commerce is committed to elevating the economic vitality and prosperity of every region of our county. The combination of an outdoor, active event that highlights a local business district is well-aligned with that mission.

The cost to participate in the 5K Fun Run/Walk is $35, as the Early Bird discount period expired last month. However, the Lake County Chamber of Commerce is offering a special promotion so that participants can enjoy the $25 entry fee, which includes a T-shirt.
