Volunteers Needed at Lucerne Alpine Senior Center

If you live on the North Shore and you’d like to help your community, Lucerne Alpine Senior Center is looking for enthusiastic, reliable volunteers of all ages to assist with our current services, and to help us expand our program to include more activities and events for seniors 55+.

We need volunteers with a variety of interests and skills for many different functions. We especially need help in the Thrift Store, someone with a truck to pick up food donations from local stores, a creative person with good organizational skills to develop and put together fundraisers, people with experience to lead activities like yoga, line dancing, chair exercises, for seniors, and a well-organized person to be our activities coordinator. We also need volunteer office help and more people to greet seniors at the lunch sign-in desk, and to help serve lunch and clean up after lunch.

If you’re interested in volunteering, please call or come to the LASC office during office hours, Tuesdays through Fridays, at 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for more information and to fill out a volunteer application. Or you can pick up an application at the Thrift Store during its open hours, Wednesdays through Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In the meantime, LASC continues to offer free guitar and ukulele classes with local musician/teacher Craig Wilczewski every Thursday at noon to 1 p.m.  Please bring an acoustic guitar or ukulele, a digital tuner, and a folder for holding music. Craig’s classes are geared toward beginners and people who want to brush up on their skills.

Amy Patton, the Lakeport Library’s crafts specialist, presents a different fun and easy craft every month. This month she’ll be showing us how to create unique, festive holiday cards. Because of the holidays this class will be held at an earlier date than usual: Thursday, December 7, at 10 a.m. The Library supplies all the materials for the program free to participants.

LASC also continues to offer Tai Chi with Paul Samberg every Friday afternoon from 2:30 to 3:30.

The Lucerne Alpine Senior Center is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m, for seniors 55+ and caregivers accompanying them. Lunch is served from  from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Suggested donation is $5 per person for lunch. Your donations help us to buy fresh, tasty food and keep our kitchen running.

We’re located at 3985 Country Club Drive in Lucerne, between 9th and 10th Avenues. Our Thrift Shop, located on 9th Avenue around the corner from the main building, is now open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., accepting donations from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. We welcome volunteers of all ages so that we can offer more services and open our Thrift Shop for longer hours.

For more information, see our our Facebook page, Lucerne Alpine Senior Center 2021, or call 707 274-8779 during office hours.

LAKEPORT

Free mending workshops at the Lake County Library

The Lake County Library provides access to free online and in-person workshops to enrich the lives of the public. Starting in December, Lakeport Library’s Fabric Club will present four “mending” workshops on the first Saturday of the month. The workshops will cover subjects from hemming to buttons and holes. The public is invited to attend the first workshop on Saturday, December 2 at the Lakeport Library from 10 a.m. to noon.

“Bring your mending and your questions!” says Amy Patton, who runs the Fabric Club out of Lakeport. Mending will be the subject of the Fabric Club for the next four months. Each mending workshop will focus on a different skill. The first workshop will cover hemming; attendees will learn to machine or hand-sew a hem. The next workshop will cover buttons as well as making and fixing holes. Contact Amy at amy.patton@lakecountyca.gov to register.

The Fabric Club meets monthly, covering a variety of subjects: sewing, quilting, embroidery, fabric-folding and other fabric crafts. The library shares a stash of fabrics and threads with attendees, but club members bring their own projects, sewing machines, and supplies. Share your knowledge and skills, learn from others, and create new projects.

A calendar of all upcoming events is available on the library website at https://library.lakecountyca.gov. For more information about these events or others, you can also contact the Lake County Library by phone at 707-263-8817, by email at library@lakecountyca.gov, or through social media: Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/LakeCountyLibrary, Twitter @LakeCoLibrary, Instagram @lakecountylibrary, YouTube @lakecountycalibrary, and TikTok @lakecountycalibrary.
