By Betty Márquez Rosales The number of youth age 17 or young who were held in local jails nationwide decreased by an average of 10 percent every year for the past decade, according to data released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs. There were 5,400 youth in local jails in 2012, a number that decreased to 1,900 last year in 2022, according to the data.
