Soper Reese to host first annual ‘Lake County Talent Showcase’ May 17
The Soper Reese Theatre, in downtown Lakeport, will host the first annual “Lake County Talent Showcase,” a Rotary Club of Lakeport fundraiser, on Friday, May 17, at 7 p.m.
The Director of this ‘Talent Showcase, Rotarian, Marie Schader, has designed this fun event by modeling it after the popular TV show, “America’s Got Talent,” where each act will be interviewed by a panel of ‘judges’ as they come out onto the stage just prior to performing.
This variety show will feature entertainers from every age group from 6 years of age up to 75 years of age. Among them will be singers, dancers, drummers, guitar soloists and a comedian/magician. A wide range of musical styles will be presented; from rock, blues, folk, showtunes and freestyle instrumentals.
The audience members will each have a minimum of three votes each to help decide which performers will be awarded the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prize money. Online voting has been in progress already at the ‘lakeportrotary.org’ website, where viewers can see preview videos of each of the 10 acts.
A large portion of the money raised by Lakeport Rotary goes towards college scholarships for high school graduates.
The Soper Reese Box Office at 275 S. Main St. will be open two hours before the show begins. General admission tickets are $30. Half-price tickets will be $15 are for those who are 18 years of age or younger; and also, for those who are 60 years of age or older. Bring the family.

May is ‘CalFresh Awareness Month’
May is “CalFresh Awareness Month.” A month of public outreach to increase awareness and enrollment in the CalFresh program.
CalFresh, known federally as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, provides monthly food benefits to individuals and families with low-income and provides economic benefits to communities. EBT is the automated system that allows CalFresh recipients to use a card, much like a debit card, to access their food benefits for purchases at grocers.
17,169 individuals in Lake County are currently receiving CalFresh benefits totaling $3.08 million per month, $32.73 million in benefits over the course of the last year. Every $1 in CalFresh generates $1.79 in local economic activity.
Many individuals and families who need food are unaware that they may qualify for assistance. For instance, a family of four earning up to $4,626 gross per month may qualify for up to $939 in CalFresh benefits each month.
Spending benefits locally helps our local economy! Through the Market Match program, you can double your CalFresh spending power at our local Farmer’s Markets, that’s like shopping for 50% off at Farmer’s Markets! See the Farmer’s Market host for additional details, or visit www.marketmatch.org.
The application process is confidential. Your county has 30 days to decide if you are eligible. Households with very low income and resources may get benefits within three days.
Get help putting healthy, nutritious food on the table. Go to www.benefitscal.com to apply now, or call (707) 995-4200 (TTY 711) Monday-Friday, 8 am to 5 pm for information on other ways to apply.
