
Middletown Art Center (MAC) held a Juneteenth celebration on Wednesday. The second annual celebration of the national holiday marks the day of June 19, 1865 when Texas, the westernmost confederate state, was forced to recognize the emancipation of slaves by the arrival of some 2000 Union troops in Galveston Bay. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved Texans were free two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect.
