RECIPROCITY Grand Opening Celebration: A renewal of the EcoArts Sculpture Walk

This Saturday August 10 from 6 PM to 8 PM, The Middletown Art Center invites the public to  the opening celebration of RECIPROCITY, an exciting revival of the EcoArts Sculpture Walk, focusing on themes of social justice and environmental stewardship. See stunning new work, meet the artists, enjoy poetry with Lake County Poet Laureate Brenda Yeager and friends, music, community, and nature! The event is free and takes place at Middletown’s Trailside County Park located at 21435 Dry Creek Cutoff off Hwy 175 between Middletown and Anderson Springs.

RECIPROCITY marks a significant moment for the community. “The park and EcoArts Sculpture Walk are like a reflection of South County’s story through the Valley Fire and COVID challenges and our evolving recovery from both,” said Lisa Kaplan, MAC’s Artistic and Executive Director. The Sculpture Walk has been dormant for the past four years due to the pandemic following a brief revival in 2019 post fire. Kaplan continues, “RECIPROCITY, EcoArts Sculpture Walk is a symbol of the profound connection between art, the natural world, and community. The new exhibit highlights the park’s remarkable recovery and signifies a collective commitment to nurturing and respecting the environment .”

RECIPROCITY features new works by 16 artists, both temporary and permanent. Works focus on land stewardship, the local environment, and honoring each other’s cultural and personal identities. Most of the artworks were created in collaboration with community members through free workshops at MAC, at community festivals, or through demographic specific outreach, for example disadvantaged youth, seniors, people with physical or cognitive disabilities, or cultural communities. In addition to creating meaningful work, the project’s goal was to reach and include diverse people, especially those who do not often engage with the arts.

Funded in part by a $60,000 grant from the California Arts Council and Upstate California Creative Corps, the project received additional support from Supervisor Moke Simon and the county’s Public Service Department, leading to improvements including stage one of a new disability access pathway and an information kiosk.

In Jaymie Hernandez de la Torre’s Mestizaje Germination earth colored patterns swirl together to create the human form which is evocative of a synthesis of bodies. The piece ”symbolizes the creation of something new, a blended identity, made possible by the shedding of single colored layers, singular identities,” explained de La Torre. “It sprouts from the knowing that what defines us is no longer what separates us, but what connects us.” The piece incorporates numerous “identity” seeds of belonging and interdependence that are scattered around its base crafted by dozens of people from all walks of life of all ages at community events and workshops.

RECIPROCITY offers a unique opportunity to contemplate the profound connection between human actions and environmental stewardship. As guests explore the thoughtfully crafted sculptures and engage with the natural surroundings, they are encouraged to spend more time in nature, find inspiration in diverse art forms, and consider how they might contribute to the health of the land. The hope is that this journey fosters a sense of unity, inspires creative exploration, and encourages a deeper commitment to both artistic expression and environmental responsibility.
