Mike Thompson for Congress campaign, local veterans express support for Harris-Walz ticket

Today the Mike Thompson for Congress campaign held a press conference with veterans from the Fourth Congressional District to share support for electing Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz this November.

“As veterans, we understand what qualities our servicemen and women need from their Commander-In-Chief. And we understand what kind of support our veterans and our military families need from their President,” said Thompson.

“Vice President Harris and Governor Walz have proven time and again that they have our backs when it comes to the big decisions that shape the lives of veterans and active duty servicemembers—from health care, to housing, to grave decisions about if and when to deploy our troops.

“As attorney general of California, Kamala Harris delivered a $1.1 billion settlement for students and veterans who got scammed by predatory for-profit colleges. As Vice President, she worked to expand health care to millions of veterans and their families through the PACT Act. And as a 24-year veteran of our armed forces, Governor Tim Walz will bring firsthand perspective on veterans issues to the White House.

“Vice President Harris and Governor Walz are running to ensure veterans and military families are treated with the respect they deserve. Though the stakes have never been higher, the choice this November has never been simpler.”

Thompson was a staff sergeant infantryman with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart. In Congress, Thompson serves as the co-chair of the Military Veterans Caucus.

“No person who served honorably in our Armed Forces should have to fight for a paycheck, proper health care, or a roof over their head. The Harris-Walz administration will work to make that a reality. Democrats are committed to ensuring current and former servicemembers and their families receive the care and benefits they earned. So let’s go get organized and let’s elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz,” said Valerie O’Pry, U.S. Army Veteran and Napa resident.

While Thompson was unavailable to attend in person due to a COVID-19 infection, the Mike Thompson for Congress campaign was joined at Napa Veterans Park by over 30 military veterans representing the North Bay area, including veterans from across California’s Fourth Congressional District.

Clear Lake Soroptimists announce Wine and Food Pairing Lunch on September 7

A long-held tradition of the Clear Lake Soroptimist Club is hosting an annual event that brings together people who share an interest in improving the lives of women and girls through education. The Wine and Food Pairing lunch aims to do just that.

For the 2024 event, Middletown Wine Maker David Rosenthal and Greenview Chef John Fallon are joining forces to provide a delicious pairing of wines and small plates. “Instead of the more conventional buffet style luncheon, we decided to try something a little different,” said Wendy Agraviador, the Club’s newest member and Treasurer. “We think everyone will enjoy the food, wine and other beverages that will be served.”

The proceeds from the luncheon will benefit local projects that share in the Clubs mission to help women and girls achieve economic empowerment through education and training. “Poverty is a pervasive factor and the main reason women are unable to obtain a higher education,” said Club President Olga Steele. “A substantial amount of the funds raised will go to women who are low income, heads of household and enrolled in vocational training or college.”

In keeping with event tradition, the agenda includes a featured talk about domestic violence. “Domestic Violence is a sad reality in society – and the reason our club is featuring Domestic Violence: Stop the Silence, a presentation by local subject matter professionals Lisa Morrow and Sheri Young of the Lake Family Resource Center,” Steele said.

Basket maker extraordinaire and Club Co-President, Cynthia Barnes said being a Soroptimist is a serious undertaking. “That is because the issues inherent in our mission are, in fact, serious. But we also know how to have fun and we have had a blast getting ready for the event and making our signature baskets for the traditional basket raffle,” she said.

Tickets for the Wine Makers Lunch are available on Eventbrite under Wine Makers Lunch, Lake County, CA. Tables of eight are also available at a discount by contacting Wendy at 510-303-1414. She will also take your ticket purchase in lieu of the Eventbrite option if you so choose.

Doors open at 11:30 am.  The September 7 event is at the Greenview Event Center, 19210 Hartmann Road, Hidden Valley.
