CAL FIRE makes arson arrest in Lake County

CAL FIRE Law Enforcement arrested 41-year-old Donald Anderson of Clearlake on four felony charges of arson in relation to two recent fires in Lake County.

Anderson was arrested at noon on Friday, Oct. 4 and booked into the Lake County Jail in Lakeport. He has been charged with two felony counts of Penal Code § 451 (c) for arson of a structure or forest land and two counts of Penal Code § 454 for arson during a state of emergency.

The charges are in relation to fires set on Sept. 22 off Seigler Canyon Road west of Lower Lake, and on Oct. 2 off New Long Valley Road in Clearlake Oaks.

The fire in Seigler Canyon burned 0.98 acres and the one off New Long Valley Road burned 0.01 acres.

Anderson has been previously arrested on arson charges by CAL FIRE. In January 2004, he received a 212-month sentence after being convicted of arson charges.

State Park interpreter to lead Guided Nature Walk at Anderson Marsh State Historic Park

The first monthly Guided Nature Walk of autumn at Anderson Marsh State Historic Park will be held on Saturday, October 12th beginning at 8:30am.

The October nature walk will be led by Andy Carpenter, the State Parks Interpretation Specialist assigned to the park. The route taken on the walk will depend on the condition of the trails. The hike should last between 1½ and 2 hours.

Bring binoculars and meet in the parking lot at 8:15am for time to experience the early morning wildlife that can be found in the Ranch House and Barn complex yard – the walk will begin at 8:30am.  Sturdy shoes, a hat and water are also suggested.

There is no charge for the Guided Nature Walk and parking is free for those attending.

Giselle Schmitz receives 2024 Phi Kappa Phi Love of Learning Award

Giselle Schmitz of Hidden Valley Lake, California, was recently awarded a Love of Learning Award worth $1,000 from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Schmitz is one of 200 recipients to receive the award.

Love of Learning Awards are designed to help fund post-baccalaureate professional development for active Phi Kappa Phi members including graduate or professional studies, doctoral dissertations, continuing education, travel related to teaching and research, career development and more.

Schmitz, a PhD student and Arrell Scholar at the University of Guelph, will use funds from the award to complete a PhD in Geography focusing on access and equity in commercial fisheries in the Pacific.

Schmitz was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi in 2022 at Fordham University.

Established in 2007, the Love of Learning Program gives 200 awards annually in support of post-baccalaureate professional development. The selection process for a Love of Learning Award is based on the applicant’s academic achievement, campus and community service, intended use of award funds as it relates to academic and career goals, and a personal statement.

Since 1932, Phi Kappa Phi’s award programs have recognized members and students on its chapter campuses for outstanding academic achievement. In addition to the Love of Learning Program, Phi Kappa Phi awards graduate and dissertation fellowships, study abroad grants, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives. Each year more than $1 million is awarded through programs.
