LAKE COUNTY>>> The Student Leadership Council, a dynamic program designed to engage young people with local government, is helping Lake County high school students develop leadership skills, learn about civic processes, and connect with their communities. Sponsored by Congressman Mike Thompson and Assembly Majority Leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, the Council brings together students from across California’s Fourth Congressional District and Fourth Assembly District, including Lake, Yolo, Colusa, Napa, and parts of Solano and Sonoma Counties.

To participate in this prestigious program, students had to complete a competitive application process and be accepted into the Council. The selection process was designed to identify passionate and dedicated students eager to learn about government and address important issues in their communities. Once accepted, these students gained a unique opportunity to work directly with elected officials, government staff, and community leaders throughout the year.

Through the Student Leadership Council, participating students have gained hands-on experience in the political process, developing the skills needed to become future leaders. The program encourages students to take an active role in addressing local challenges while learning how government works at the local, state, and federal levels.

Lake County students have actively participated in the Council’s meetings and events. On December 7, the Council hosted an engaging and informative session that featured several prominent speakers. Vacaville City Council Member and Solano Community College Biotechnology Professor Michael Silva shared valuable insights on the intersection of education, industry, and government. Greg House of the Solano County Farm Bureau provided a look into the role of agriculture in local policy and the economy. Students also toured Solano Community College’s Biotechnology program, learning about cutting-edge career opportunities in the field of biotech.

Earlier this year, on October 26, the Student Leadership Council had the opportunity to meet with Congressman Mike Thompson in a special session where they heard from local government officials and received a presentation from CALFire. The session focused on fire safety, disaster preparedness, and the role of government agencies in protecting communities from natural disasters. Students engaged in discussions on emergency response strategies and learned about the critical work CALFire does to keep California safe during fire season.

The next Student Leadership Council meeting will be held in Lake County, providing an exciting opportunity for students to engage with their elected officials and community leaders closer to home. The upcoming meeting will feature additional discussions on local issues, including economic development, environmental sustainability, and public health, and will include interactive activities designed to help students develop practical leadership skills.

The program will culminate in a graduation ceremony in March 2025, where participating students will be recognized for their achievements and leadership growth throughout the year. This event will honor their commitment to learning and community engagement, as well as their readiness to take on future leadership roles.

The Student Leadership Council continues to provide Lake County students with an invaluable platform for learning, growth, and civic engagement. By participating in this program, students are not only learning about government but also actively contributing to the betterment of their communities.
