MIDDLETOWN— Middletown and Weed squared off in the 2025 CIF State Boys Basketball Championships on Tuesday, but Middletown had to settle for second after finishing their season at 24-8 overall and 13-2, good enough for first place in the North Central I League. The Mustangs fell 70-63 to the Weed Cougars. Despite a higher scoring output than their previous playoff game last Saturday (55), the Mustangs could not overcome the visiting Cougars.

For Weed, the victory (which was their 19th in a row) giving them a record of 25-6 on the season.

The Weed Cougars advance to duke it out with Fortune Early College Panthers at 7 p.m. on Thursday, hoping to make the regional finals. Fortune Early College is on a six-game streak of home wins, Weed a 14-game streak of away wins (dating back to last season)– so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court.
