Senate and Assembly announce Legislative Budget agreement
California is facing unprecedented threats from the Trump administration, including harmful cuts and costly tariffs that are driving up prices for families and businesses, and escalating immigration raids designed to stoke fear in Los Angeles and communities across the state.
The Senate and Assembly’s budget agreement is a fiscally responsible strategy that prepares California for economic uncertainty caused by the chaos in Washington and ensures the ability to adapt as needed for the future. It is also based on shared sacrifice: We’re not turning our backs on California’s most vulnerable.
The two houses reversed some of the most devastating proposed cuts to health care and social service access for millions of families, while making the tough decisions needed to reduce costs and balance the budget.
The agreement also advances landmark policies that will fast-track housing construction and wildfire prevention, invest in resources to combat homelessness, and help make California more affordable. It includes smart investments in public safety and makes sure our kids and public schools are even stronger.
“California’s workers and businesses power our nation-leading economy, and our legislative budget prepares the Golden State for deep uncertainty in the face of chaotic and vengeful attacks, and the cuts and tariffs pushed by Republicans and the Trump administration,” noted Senate Pro Tem Mike McGuire and Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas.
“While we have made many tough but necessary decisions to achieve a balanced budget, we will never waver in our commitment to all Californians. This budget fights to protect health care access for millions of the most vulnerable families, speeds-up housing construction, and makes homes more affordable. It advances historic investments in CAL FIRE to make our state more fire safe, and prioritizes our kids and public schools.
“We appreciate the hard work and dedication of our budget chairs, Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel and Senator Scott Wiener, along with our budget subcommittee leaders and staff, who have been working tirelessly to build a budget that delivers for all 40 million Californians.”
The Senate and Assembly will hold hearings on the budget agreement this week and a final floor vote is expected to take place later in the week.

Padilla, Schiff, Schumer demand answers from Trump administration on arrest and detention of SEIU Union labor leader David Huerta
U.S. Senators Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Immigration Subcommittee, Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) are demanding answers from top Trump Administration officials regarding the arrest and detention of David Huerta, President of Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California and SEIU-United Service Workers West. Mr. Huerta was injured, arrested, and detained by federal officials in Downtown Los Angeles while exercising his lawful right to observe the conduct of immigration enforcement personnel on Friday, June 6, 2025. He currently remains detained in federal custody.
“It is deeply troubling that a U.S. citizen, union leader, and upstanding member of the Los Angeles community continues to be detained by the federal government for exercising his rights to observe immigration enforcement,” wrote the Senators.
“As U.S. Senators, we are privileged and proud to represent Americans like Mr. Huerta, who are pillars of their community and stand up for the fundamental rights of all Californians. We have a constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice and its components to ensure that the rights of Californians are upheld. As such, we demand a complete and comprehensive response to the following requests regarding this incident by Friday, June 13, 2025,” concluded the Senators.
The Senators are voicing their serious concerns to Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Acting Director Todd M. Lyons.
Yesterday, Senator Padilla joined MSNBC’s “The Weekend: Primetime” to condemn the Trump Administration’s ICE raids across Los Angeles and President Trump’s ensuing unprecedented deployment of nearly 2,000 members of California’s National Guard to the region. Padilla also joined Los Angeles outlets KTLA and KNX last night to discuss the fear and chaos the Trump Administration is stoking in Los Angeles and across California. On Friday, Padilla issued a statement condemning the Los Angeles ICE raids.
