From the Netherlands to Clearlake: Meet Vice Mayor Dirk Slooten
From a life of global travel to more than 50 countries, Vice Mayor Dirk Slooten’s travels led him to the community he now proudly calls home: Clearlake.
Born, raised, and educated in the Netherlands, Dirk earned a degree in engineering before visiting relatives in California in 1972. That trip sparked a lifelong love of the state’s natural beauty. He spent four months traveling Highway 1, taking in the Pacific coastline and imagining a future life in California.
After relocating to California in 1972, and after working for other Civil Engineering firms, Dirk launched an engineering and land surveying firm in Sacramento in 1993. He successfully ran the firm for decades before selling it to two longtime employees upon retirement.
By the mid-90s, he purchased a vacation home on Clear Lake, remembering Clearlake from visiting in 1974 when what is now City Hall was still a Safeway. About 10 years ago, Dirk and his wife Karen made Clearlake their permanent home and still live in that same house today.
Dirk first served on the Planning Commission before being elected to the Clearlake City Council in 2018. He is especially excited about the Airport Redevelopment Project, which he sees as a cornerstone for the city’s future, bringing jobs, healthcare, new services, and long-term opportunity. He also helped keep Woodland Community College in Clearlake and continues to support the Yuba Community College Foundation, recognizing the importance of local education for the city’s next generation.
Outside of City Hall, Dirk is a lifelong traveler and avid ocean fisherman, having fished around the globe. Among the many countries he has explored, he and Karen, married for 13 years, hold a special fondness for Belize, Ireland, Portugal, Northern Spain and, of course, his native country Holland.

City officials thank firefighters and first responder teams
This week, our community witnessed the skill and dedication of firefighters from the Lake County Fire Protection District and CAL FIRE as they quickly responded to the Lake Fire. Their swift action helped contain the fire and protect our homes, lives, and beautiful surroundings.
“On behalf of the City of Clearlake and our residents, thank you to every firefighter, first responder, and support team member who worked tirelessly to keep our community safe,” said Mayor Russ Cremer. “Your expertise and courage make all the difference in moments like these.”
While the City of Clearlake does not operate its own fire department, fire protection is provided by Lake County Fire, a special district that serves much of Lake County. This district has its own elected board of directors, budget, equipment, and facilities, and the City works closely with their team to coordinate public safety efforts. Together with CAL FIRE, they provide the skilled, immediate response our community relies on during fire season.
“Thank you again to CAL FIRE and the Lake County Fire Protection District for answering the call and protecting Clearlake,” said City Manager Alan Flora. “The sight of firefighters walking into the fire zone is a powerful reminder that their courage keeps our community safe.”
